Welcome to the Book Discussion Forum!

Welcome to the Book Discussion Forum :-)

This is a place where we can have exciting discussions about literature (yes, that is, in fact, possible :-)).  Basically, if you want to write up a post about what you're reading and e-mail it to me, I'll get it up on this site and open it up for everyone.

This can be a really great way to talk about books, to give your input, and to get some good recommended reading.

That being said, it will only be as good as you make it ...

So to start with, I'm going to share a little bit about the book I'm reading right now.  Please feel free to weigh in.

Book Title: Rangers Apprentice Book 3: The Icebound Land
Author: John Flanagan
Reading Response:
One of my students got me into this series, and I'm really enjoying it. The main character, Will, is an apprentice Ranger. Rangers are kind of like special ops soldiers ... they are trained to think quickly on their feet, to be masters of camouflage, and to fight in ways that knights can't because they're bound by rules of chivalry. I'm pretty sure the setting is in the past as technology is non-existent and fighting is done with swords and bows and arrows and stuff like that.

In the third book, Will has been kidnapped by a group of Skandians (a group of people that hire themselves out as warriors for money) along with his traveling companion Evanlyn (she's really the king's daughter in disguise). The Skandian captain that had captured Will and Evanlyn is named Erak, and he's not really a bad guy. He is really upset by how badly the two of them are treated by some other Skandians.

Will was given the hardest possible duty for slaves, working outside, and he becomes addicted to a drug called warmweed in order to survive (the drug makes him feel warm so he doesn't notice the cold and pain while he is working).

Erak is disgusted by this, so he secretly helps Evanlyn escape with Will. He gives her some food and directions to a secret hut. He also gives her a little bit of warmweed so that she can wean Will off the drug.

The part I'm at now is kind of interesting, because Will is starting to get a little bit better. He actually says a word to Evanlyn. This is a good thing, because Evanlyn is a complete failure at hunting. Erak made sure the hut was stocked with basic food (rice, beans, and so forth), but Evanlyn is desperate for fresh meat and Will is a master hunter (when he's not addicted to warmweed).

I'm looking forward to finding out whether or not Will overcomes his addiction to warmweed, and I'm also really curious about the character of Erak. He seems like a villain in the second book because he takes Will and Evanlyn far away over the ocean to a completely different place and has them forced to be slaves.
